The news comes two days after four-star cornerback Geno Smith picked rival Alabama over Auburn.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Jones had Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Texas Tech among his top choices. ESPN ranks Jones as the 22nd best cornerback nationally. Scout has him 38th and Rivals 42nd.

He is considered one of the fastest football prospects in Georgia, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Last May, he won the state 110-meter hurdles (14.02 seconds) and 300-meter hurdles (37.39 seconds).

Jones is the second cornerback in Auburn’s 2012 class, joining Joshua Holsey of Fairburn, Ga.

  1. Another great pickup for the Auburn coaching staff. The experts can rate Jones a 3* all they want, he’s an AJC Elite 11 player with a hitter’s mentality and Olympic speed.

War Eagle Jonathan and welcome to the Auburn family!

  2. Welcome Mr. Jones! We are happy that you chose Auburn over Alabama. Now you will play for the National Champions all this season and learn from the best coaches in college football today! We look forward to watching you play at your very best level. You are an Auburn now and will be forever. Welcome to the family! War Damn Eagle!

  3. Do you think we accepted his commitment after we didn’t get Smith? I mean, we can say we wanted Jones first all along, but I feel like we really wanted Geno. Once he picked Bama (sucks!), then we took Jones’ commitment?

  5. Auburn coaches probably felt that both Smith and Jones are potential SEC DB’s. I think they would have taken Smith first had he chosen Auburn. Whether we’d still have taken Jones is something only the coaches know. It’s clear that they had Jones all primed and ready to go when Smith picked UAT, so it’s not like Jones was a last-second fallback guy.
