Recapping Gene Chizik’s teleconference

Gene Chizik had his weekly teleconference today. Here’s what he said:

Follow the blog on Twitter and Facebook.

  • “I feel like there are things that are extremely fixable.” Mentioned “glaring missed tackles” as a big problem. Perimeter blocking on offense. Pass protection.
  • “Not one bit happy with the performance. We’ve got to certainly coach them better and we’ve got to play better.”
  • “The standard hasn’t changed.”
  • “We’ve got a lot of work to do.There’s an opportunity to get better, without question.”
  • Are third downs getting in their heads mentally? “I know there are a plethora of reasons why we’re not successful on third downs.” Said it’s for different reasons: missed tackles, a great throw, coverage where they’re late to arrive. “It’s very glaring that there is a problem.”
  • Will it just take time for youngsters to mature: “The certain problems are going to be solved by them executing what is called. Whether it’s a senior, none of that matters. We’re in game 4 now. We dont’ have any new players.”
  • “We’re spending a great deal of time examining every inch of off, def, spec teams from a personnel standpoint and X’s and O’s standpoint.”
  • Said four-man pass rush has been very average at best. “The production in pass rush has been slim to none.”
  • Jonathan Evans is “beat up.” He’s day to day.
  • Mike Dyer’s not beat up. “You can expect him to get the ball more in the future.”
  • Chris Davis is beat up too. Barrett Trotter took some shots. “Several individuals are at that point of the year where they are nicked and bruised.”
  • Holding anybody out this week? “We’re not presumptuous about anything.”
  • On tackling technique, is it different than what others teach: “Not that I’m aware of.”
  • On Dyer’s preferred number of carries. “I don’t know that I’ll put a number on it,” he said. “It is my thought that he’ll carry the ball more than he has.”
  • Why only 16 last week? Did that seem low? “He was very productive as we all know. That’s the reason that I’m saying our aim is to get him more.”
  • Do you the young guys respond on defense like senior would? “I don’t think that’s the case. They’re in the fire. They have to respond. That’s just the way it is. … There’s new guys. They’ve all played.”
  • “We get no sympathy of any sort. We got beat. And that’s not the standard that we set. There’s only one way to respond. To go back to work.”
  • On Kiehl Frazier‘s role expanding: “We hope that it can. Him expanding the role in the offense is certainly we want to do. His role is critical to whether we do or not. That’s getting better and continuing to grow.”
  • FB Ladarious Phillips did not make the road trip for a violation of team rules. Same with CB Jonathan Rose. Chizik said he’ll revisit their situations early this week.
  • “As bad as we played in time at the game, we had our opportunities to beat a very good football team on the road.”
  • On what he’d tell the fans disappointed with the defense: “We’re working every day to get better.”
  • “Make sure everybody understands: these are things that start with us as coaches, period. Tackling? Coaching. Decision making in the kicking game? Coaching. Picking up twists? Coaching. Throwing interceptions? Coaching. That’s what we get paid to do.”
  • Chizik on Cam Newton‘s big passing numbers: “I guess he can read defenses, huh?”

  1. OK, sorry to be a negative nellie, but if missed tackles are so extremely easy to fix, why haven’t they been fixed before now? It’s not like this game was the first time they were a problem. But I have faith in our coaches and I know they will get things turned around.

  2. I love the question about tackling technique and if it’s taught different than elsewhere. According to Paul Rhoads, it is! Get it fixed, Gene! Now!!!
